Editor Q&A: Jennifer Miller, Samhain Publishing

image.pngJennifer Miller has lived in sunny Southern California ever since she earned her master’s degree in education from UCLA, but she is half Northern (Canadian) and half Southern girl by blood.

After working in jobs ranging from investment sales to teaching to acting on stage, Jennifer finally settled into working with books—romantic fiction in particular. She has been with Samhain since early 2007.

Jennifer enjoys all romances with likeable, interesting characters, lots of action, and loads of sexual tension. She is a self-proclaimed “conflict junkie” – her favorite books all contain powerful, seemingly unable-to-overcome conflicts. She especially loves books that make her sigh with pleasure at the end and believe in happily ever afters. She is a sucker for everything romantic.

Jennifer is looking for all genres of romance but is currently especially interested in compelling hot contemporary romance and paranormal romance or urban fantasies with a fresh twist.

We asked Jennifer a few questions. Here are her answers.

1. If you could go anywhere on vacation and money was not object, where would you go and why?

I’d really like to go to Egypt, take a long trip down the Nile, and explore all the archeological sites along the way.

2. What excites you about your job?

Finding a great new author from deep in the slush pile. I also love watching new authors’ careers grow.

3. What would you like authors to know about working with an editor or agent?

Editors and agents are people too. We all have our personalities and quirks. The trick is to find the one who works best with you.

4. What would you absolutely love to see come across your desk right now?

I’m always looking for fantastic sexy contemporaries. I will always have a soft spot for a well-written contemporary romance! But lately I’ve been loving non-traditional paranormals, such as cyberpunk, steampunk, historical paranormals, superheroes, etc.
